[ Rick is at the arena practicing his knife-throwing skills. He’s a good shot with his guns, yeah. And he’s alright with hand-to-hand and most close combat weapons. Unable to sleep the last few nights though, and he’s ended up here more often than not, trying to keep the image of Lori and all the unsteady emotions that that brings about at bay – trying not to think too much about the children he’s left back at home in a terrible situation – generally trying not to think about a lot of things.

After he finishes with the knives, he decides to practice this new shadow magic thing that this place has given him. He’d been working hard at it, building up his skills with it as much as he can. It isn’t always easy to focus enough to get it to do much of anything, especially on bad days like the last three when he's been thinking too much, his mind so scattered, emotions so raw. But as long as he’s trying, it makes him feel like he’s doing something productive.

In spite of how worn and tired he might look and out of his own curiosity, he flips on the video, wipes the sleeve of his shirt over his brow and poses a question. ]

Don’t guess anybody’s got any tips on gettin’ control of these powers they gave us. Aside from the obvious concentration.

I might have a few! And depending on which power you have, one of my friends can help you even more. [ she offers a small smile.

although she would need to talk to her friends about that, but minako was sure they wouldn't refuse to help someone in need! this would also depend on rick though. there was no point going to them if he didn't want their thlep.]

[ He really is glad for the assistance, not to mention the seemingly friendly face on the video. His world has nothing like these powers that he knows of. It's been difficult to believe in them whole-heartedly, much less navigate them with any ease. ]

That'd be real kind of you to take the time if you don't mind. I got this shadow power. Can't seem to do a whole lot with it except make it move here and there when my mind's into it.

Rick. [She gently smiles at him because, what else can she do ? She really would like to see him happy.]

That's something I'd like to know too, I kinda still suck at using mine.

[ and he's just in luck because someone very close to her has the same power! or so minako believes it is because he can manipulate shadows. first things first though; there were a few questions she had to ask. ]

You're in God is Hel, right? If I remember correctly the people in his House have dark powers like that. And your powers start out small and minor like that.

All I can do right now is help people feel calm, but sooner or later I'll be able to make them do what I want.

[ Buffy watches him throw the knives and is, generally speaking, pretty impressed with his skill. She keeps back, out of sight, as she came in later than he did today. She smiles a little as she studies his motions, the way he squares his feet and shoulders. His positioning could use a little work; she can teach him more later. For now, she's content to make an assessment. She did hire him for this sort of thing, after all.

His shadow magic, however, she's not really going to be much help with. She's just got strength. She wanders up behind him just after he starts the feed. ]

You'd have better luck with the knives if you didn't overthink it so much.

If I knew, I would offer. I have the same power.

What kind of power have you got, mate? I tried practicing mine with someone else from Hel. Don't really know how far we got, but I guess it's a start?

I started with making shadow puppets and shaping them. Helps if you're already partway there.

I would not be opposed to having a partner to practice with. I could also use the training with guns. Kara was nice enough to teach me, but I would do well to practice on my own.

Make it into second nature. Like breathing.

The shadow power? I'm not sure. Mine is healing. But maybe others in your house can help you with that?

Not bad. And I've heard this 'Teacher's Council' can help with the powers. Merlin I think it was that's in charge. I've just practiced mine a lot, I guess. Flying might be a bit easier to manage than the shadow thing though.

I'll have to find this Merlin guy. He got a last name? How high can you fly?

You can heal? Just yourself or others too?

Guess I still don't fully trust it enough to do that.

You shape 'em just by... dreamin' 'em up?

The shadow one. Can make my shadow move just a bit. But other than that, that's as far as I've gotten. Guess I can't fully wrap my mind around it yet.

Have you tried usin' it at all? Maybe we could work together. Strength in numbers and all.

[ He hadn't even known she was watching really. More like he had the feeling that he wasn't alone in the place than any actual acknowledgement that she was there. So when she speaks, he startles a bit and looks back to her. ]

Yeah, I don't have much experience throwing knives. More about the up close and personal kind of attack. [ Walkers in his face, teeth bared, wanting a bite. Him pushing them away just enough for a killing blow. ]

Now with a gun I'm pretty good. [ It's obvious he didn't mean to brag about it. Very clinical, in fact. Rick isn't one to boast. But he does want her to know he isn't completely inept. ] Worked for the Sheriff department back home before everything went belly up.

[ He does make an effort for her, an effort to straighten out the stressed lines of his face. ]

What's your power again?

[ Now that's interesting. Help people feel calm. Rick's head tilts at a slight angle, both processing and curious. Eyes squinted as he tries to work that out through all the turmoil in his mind right now. ]

You can affect people's emotions? I mean, yeah Hel. But how's that work? Makin' people feel calm.

It's not going to hurt you.

You really trust somehin' that's freely given to you? [ He shakes his head. ] Not sure anything in life is free. Just wonderin' where the catch is.

[It doesn't quite fool her though.]

Growth. Like... Making plants grow faster, you know.
