Winter Solstice is the longest night of winter, when the days are the shortest and the world is the darkest. It's a day to celebrate the cycles of death and rebirth in the world and the cycle of the harvest season. Hogmanay is a day for the changing of the year. They're similar in a way. Brush out the old, bring in the new. Good wishes for the next year. Salt was supposed to be good luck.

As for work, just start simple. As long as you can count change, you can work a desk. How old you are shouldn't matter that much for something like cleaning up or taking change.
