009 - Video

[Enough of this. The giants were skulking back home. The wounded that could be saved were being tended to already and beyond any sort of help she could care for. The buildings would be repaired eventually, and life was in theory starting to resume again, even if the dead were still dead. Things were as normal as they ever got in Asgard. Sam hated the idea of spending the next several days just sitting there, shocked that she was still alive and here. She wanted something to do.

So, she'd plopped herself on a bench in her backroom, and it looked like she was diluting some sort of red solution. Pausing, she reached up and cracked her neck, looking at the 'screen.']

Pinch of Sage has a special, going for the next three days. I've got some extra backstock on teas here, and a bit of extra Affadil leaves from my supplier. First ten each day to come in and ask get a free box of chamomile, and I'll have Affadil Tea brewing if you want to try a cup. [Did she have a wicked grin on her face as she said that? It might be because the stuff tasted beyond vile.]

In the meantime, we're open again. Outside of the anti-curse stuff [And the Poisons... but she didn't advertise that.], I'm going to be mostly out of potions for stamina and poultices for the next week at least before my next stock from Utgard gets in. Everything else is still in stock, and I'm doing some testing on what I'll just call the product I got a couple days ago. Might have some interesting results soon. Silver rune to anyone willing to clean up the debris and crap from the street in front of the shop. Oh... and if anyone wants lessons on protecting against Body Control, I'm offering free of charge. Call it a public service.

... and just, kind of a heads up if you knew Painwheel. She's been gone since before the fighting. I checked, but I figured a couple of you might want to know. Her spot at the counter's open if you want it. I've got a local kid running it most days, even if the punk's not exactly great with numbers yet.

That depends extensively on what's wrong with it. You're obviously not dead anymore, so I'm going to assume at least a little oxygen's flowing into ... what was it he called it? A thinkpan?

[She chuckled.]

[She was giggling again. She really had trouble taking Sollux seriously, and it was obvious in her voice. True, he had some good things to say, but it was the comical way he overreacted to literally everything.]

Hey, I love being me, what can I say. And yeah, I guess I'm just about the only person who can put up with that pushy, demanding little gill for brains, aren't I. Guess that makes me all kinds of special.

I've got a couple painkillers. Over the counter mostly. How bad's the pain?

Do you have dandelion or nettles?

[They're nothing he keeps in stock for his purposes, but they are common teas so he figures it won't hurt to ask Samantha. He's a bit pale, a good hint as to why he wants the iron-rich plants; being one of the only individuals capable of dealing with blood loss during a war takes a toll when you have to treat it by absorbing it.]

Double, double, Toil and trouble. A pinch of sage is just the right thing for a witches brew. ((She would cackle if cackling was her thing. Instead, she has fun with it.))

[He can't say much about her character yet, but enough of what she has said forces Aleos to speak up, his curiosity a little more obvious than it would normally be.]

You're being awfully generous, aren't you?

Yeah, should have some stock of that around here. Stop by. I've gotten in some supplements too, if you do that sort of thing.

[She isn't particularly surprised by the request, honestly, so she's already making it a point to find the iron supplements. Frankly, there would probably be a few with that power who should do the same.]

[Have a cackle right back. Damn, she wishes she had a witch's cap right now.] Now all I need's a cauldron instead of a vat of dragon's blood for diluting. Still, nothing wrong with a drop of dragon's blood to go with the eye of newt.

Nope. It's called advertising. Tea's cheap, chamomile's really cheap and people will want help sleeping after last week. Drums up business for later and doesn't cost much.

...and seeing people's faces when they drink the Affadil's just fun. If I've got to drink the swill, might as well get to see other people make a face now and again.

[And he is, as soon as he can convince his wife and friends to let him off of bed rest so he can go outside. He's going stircrazy anyway.

He hasn't actually been to Samantha's shop yet, so he glances around curiously when he arrives.]

I'm sure you could find yourself a kettle that you might make the most dubious of brews in a place like this. I mean, it would be quite a shame that in a magical world something like that shouldn't exist.

mmm, it would need to be glass lined. This blood chews through metal like you would not believe. But, if I could get a good cauldron... it really would complete the image, wouldn't it?

[Forgive her. She's having a nice image in her head with that thought. It shows on her face.]</small. I'm getting goosebumps, you know that?

[It's cramped, to say the least. There's enough space for a single table beside the front counter with a pair of chairs, but even behind the counter it isn't large. The herbal racks behind are saturated with simple, well-known cure-alls. None of the magical herbs are apparent.

Sam was manning the counter when he got in. The dilution was done, and it needed to cool before she could test it anyway. A pot of something that had a faintly leathery smell was heating up on the counter. She waved when he came in, smiling.]

You, sir, look like hell.

[His hands are tucked in his jacket pockets and he's wearing several layers, sensitive to the cold even when he's not unwell, and his hair is getting a bit long as well and therefore falling over instead of standing upright. He does indeed look kind of pathetic, but...]

I have been to Hell several times, and I do not share a resemblance.

[He knows exactly what she meant, but he's being difficult on purpose as he steps up closer to the counter.]

How are you faring?

[He hadn't seen her much since the Lamia, and the battle took it's toll on everyone.]

Better. I cope by working. It keeps my mind off things that are bothering me to feel like I'm accomplishing something. Ignoring how close we all came to a total loss, I'm personally doing fairly well.

And you... look like you've been overdoing it trying to keep everyone alive.

I do the same.

[Hence his current state; his only coping mechanisms ware helping or drinking, and as the latter is banned for him by his family--which is really hypocritical of them--he'd focused on the former. But then Sam had threatened to carry him over his shoulder again if he refused to come back home, and he'd been put on resting duty ever since.]

There are still many injuries, but now that there are no longer being new ones created at such a high rate, soon everyone will be taken care of.

Basically, at this point, it's out of the magical healer's hands for the most part. If they're going to survive, they're going to survive. Letting them polish it off, it's time for rebuilding, or in my case research.

There's no way in hell I'm letting this crap happen again. I mean to find weapons.

[She set out the tea box for what he needed and walked over to pour herself a cup of what was brewing.]

Want a cup of something foul, angel?

...you're alive.

[ In case you hadn't noticed, Samantha! But there is a hint of relief there. ]

Yep. I tend not go die easily, not that it hasn't happened before anyway. I see you didn't kick it either. Congratulations?

[She's chuckling. In the fact of horror? Laughter. At least she's not surprised when people think she's a bit off her rocker.]

[ Happened... before. ]

What does it feel like? Dying.

You really want to know? [She snorts.]

Fair enough, I can share this little tidbit. It might sound stupid, but it hurts like hell. You probably don't want the details.

[It was also somewhat debatable if she would share them. She tended to be cryptic with people about the whole having died thing without a bit of pressure.]

I don't. [ Pause. ] But I should know.

[Ok, he caught her attention with that 'should' comment. She cocked her head and switched to a private video feed. The girl had a bit of a deadpan look to her. She was still working on the red solution, half looking at him, but paying more attention to the work in front of her.]

I don't usually talk about the details, Shinji. It isn't pleasant to remember how I've died, but I'm feeling like humoring people.

Tell me why I should know, and depending upon how you answer I might explain some. I probably won't tell you about all of them. [She shuddered.]

[ And now, for more innocuous consideration. ]

I know someone else who's - been killed. Who was killed. Not here, though. Not... not where he might still be well, when this is over. I owe it to this person to know what he's gone through.
