5th Card ♛ Anon Text

Hello Travelers,

In your opinion, what's the best type of illusion?

((ooc: WOOOOOH, ??? is officially LEVEL 3 for Telepathy! This is as close to a personal celebration post as it can get since he's a paranoid brat who doesn't like to talk about personal things. Unless he's tired.

Dorm internet's still crappy. Pardon the slow-ness.))

[She had started to catch the idea that her font choice might have been recognizable. She switched to another and tossed her reply in an anonymous fashion. For a moment, she felt some of her old paranoia kicking in, enough to keep her from being too terribly obvious with this one.

Perhaps it was the fact that illusions used to be her forte.

The sort that the person wants to believe. They will do half the work for you.

It depends upon the viewer, but to me the thing that is desired the most is never a thing that is believable. People disbelieve those things, even when they possess them in their very hands. We cannot comprehend having what it is that we truly desire.

To me, the finest illusion is of the soul's worst fear, the fear that is deep enough within them that they have not personally accepted that it even exists. Something so primordial that it afflicts not their mental process, but the sub-processes that occur in the medula, regulating breathing and heart-rate. Something which causes the person, afflicted by fear, to be enraptured in their own fears to the culmination of the experience.

[In reality, she'd hated that spell. She'd had a lesser version of just that trick, and it had been a cruel, vicious illusion, one that could make the body damage itself without knowing it. She'd only used it once or twice for a reason, but in the end, there were far more perfect versions of it.]

Self-assessment is a folly. Even the most keen introspective souls can only glimpse fragments in the end. It is guesswork to say that it would fail or succeed, though fear has never been a strong motivator for me personally. Knowing that it exists, or understanding illusions gives both a great strength in defending against them, and at the same time a crutch that can be used against someone.

Were I honest? I would suggest that the best mix for one familiar with illusions and deception is a mixture of their fear, combined with something that strokes their ego, making them feel as if they have managed to discover a secret. Conspiracies work well in this way, and in fact you don't need magic to do that, just circumstantial lies and well placed misinformation, carefully timed and spaced. Their mind should do the rest for it.

[Ok, that was a little eerily close to home, she had to admit. Maybe she liked using these moments of 'anonymity' to serve as a personal reflection upon her own perceived weaknesses?]

They are illusions. Fabrications of the mind that approximate the things that one has experienced beforehand, echoes of the past. They aren't the actual thing as experienced, simply fragments constructed by the mind to recall what was seen or done.

Like other illusions, it is possible to fabricate more of them, to the point where a detailed falsehood can afflict a person's sense of self. The main difference between they and dreams is that, in theory at least, a memory has occurred, and usually lasts longer in the mind.

I don't really know if I like the idea of illusions at all.

I think a better question would be why you want to know. Unless you are plotting something, many would find this topic questionable at most. Perhaps even suspicious.
