-no such thing as a 'murder magnet', Kaito-niichan. You're just making stuff up!

[The video feed is elevated, looking down on Conan's head from above and slightly behind. The pseudo-seven year old may not be aware he's being filmed, but the childish persona is in full force -- cute, slightly petulant tone of voice, and his forensic unit paperwork and notebooks out of sight in his brightly coloured school bag. Unaware of the scrutiny being directed at the top of his head, Conan continues his complaint.]

Anyway, Uncle's a detective, so it's not surprising that in the line of work, we'd encounter cases!

[Cases, he says… You know, the last time he checked, Japan’s crime rate was supposed to be low. The teenager’s fiddling with his bracelet causes the sound to oscillate for a moment. His tone, however, maintains steadily unimpressed, and perhaps just a little incredulous. ]

Uh… huh. And you wanna tell me how you manage to just happen to stumble on these ‘cases’ wherever you go? It just tells me that if I wanna get to the bottom of all this weirdness lately, I’d better start with the center of it all. Who is, naturally, the most suspicious guy.

[The look that Conan gives Kaito is baleful -- not helped as he takes in the bracelet, realises that he is being recorded.]

You make it sound like I'm responsible! I'm investigating!

So am I! I’m in the process of documenting the natural properties of detective-brats and their ability to somehow self-sustain their professions. Seriously, you attract weirdness. And dead people. You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if cosmic karma was all ‘oh, hey, it’s that brat again, let’s make him trip over some dead bodies’.

[Conan rolls his eyes as Kaito's monologue continues, quickly becoming distracted by something he's spotted off camera. He stops walking; caught up in his speech, Kaito doesn't immediately notice.]

-- and if I can reverse-engineer that, I’ll be a millionaire. I mean, who wouldn't want an all-purpose murder repellant? [Beat] Oi, detective-brat, you listening?

[Turning as Kaito does, the feed swings round to show Conan opening the door of a shed that opens the street. As the door swings open, a man is revealed. His posture, his unnatural lack of colour, the fact that without the shed door holding him in place he falls to land flat in front of Conan -- it is immediately obvious that they've found a dead body.

There's a moment when neither of them react, and then Kaito swallows audibly.]

I repeat -- murder magnet.

Turn that off.

which means he just has to get a snipe in edgewise as he flicks the bracelet video shut. ] Good thing I got some of that on camera. Now, you can't deny that this never happened and that I'm not, on at least some level, so right about all this.

[Conan's grateful for the sound of the bracelet flicking off. He can glare at Kaito without having to worry about his little kid cover.]

The man's been dead about six hours. Long before we got here.

[ and in a way, kaito is also glad. mostly because your little kid cover is creepy. seriously. ]

Nooot about to rule out the possibility of you traveling through time, thank you very much.

Travelling through time? [Ha -- does this guy give me too much credit or too little? Conan doesn't pause in his examination of the scene.] This isn't any time to joke Kaito-niichan. Watch what I do carefully -- you might have to give evidence to the fact that I didn't tamper with the crime-scene later.

[ ... shit, this is serious. underneath his facade, kaito is actually vaguely disturbed. he can't seem to get the dead body out of the corner of his range of sight. it's like the carwreck that nobody wants to take responsibility for. his acting flows smoothly. ]

H-hey, are you sure I can be a witness? More importantly, shouldn't we contact the professionals and whatever and let them take care of it?

Before we contact the Forensics Unit, we need to get as much information as we can about the scene. [Death never gets easy; particularly when undercutting it is the lurking suspicion that this could have been you. The conversation with Kaito helps keep emotion at distance, normalize the situation -- as much as conversation with Kaito can ever be normal.]

So... what, you're gonna take out your boy-scout magnifying glass and look for breadcrumbs? [ jabbing a thumb at the corpse! ]

I don't know about you, but I really don't wanna stick around until whatever happened to that guy happens to us.

[Conan was just reaching for his magnifying glass. He glares then catches himself -- detailed analysis is better left until the team arrives.]

It's better that Kaito-niichan stays until the Forensics Unit arrives. They won't be long -- I'll call them now.

[Merlin's gaze flicks between the two of them warily.]

You're being careful, aren't you?

[What did she just see?]

Are... you two okay?

Very careful, Merlin-niichan!

[Conan's nod punctuates that sentence.]

Ah -- we're okay, Euri-neechan! It looks like whatever happened, it happened a while ago!

[ side-eying the tiny boy off to his side. can you hear the sarcasm dripping from his voice-- ]

Yeah, so careful that dead bodies have to practically find us.

No. No, I'm not, Euri. Save me from the murder-magnet.

[ he catches that half-attempted action and... snerk, he really was reaching for his magnifying glass. ]

Fine, fine, I'll stay-- but it's not like this dead body is going anywhere.

[It's so weird seeing a human kid so calm about a dead body....]

That's a native, then...?

Kaito, don't be mean! Conan's just a kid!

But did you see the way we stumbled over that dead body? It was a half-hour walk!

I'm sure it was just a coincidence. A creepy one, but still a coincidence!

[She knows fuck all about this kind of thing.]

If this is their idea of humour, then I suggest that they stop trying. Seriously, at this rate, I'm gonna be traumatized forever.

Yet.

[Their bracelets can't be used to contact Asgard Citizens and there isn't a native telephone system, but Conan's used to circumventing that, calling department members until he finds one that is present in the hospital and able to relay his message to the rest of the team.

It's such a matter of routine in fact that Conan forgets his audience, his instructions crisp and exact.]

I think so! He's not someone I recognise and he lacks a bracelet. He's also wearing native attire and shows no sign of losing his colour. If he starts to fade once we get him back to the hospital we might have to re-evaluate, but I think it's safe to say that he was a citizen for now.

Aw, but the body isn't even moving! That's not very scary.

Yeah? So you wanna swap places? I've got a great view of the dead guy's tonsils.
