011 - Video

[The image is a somewhat rare sight. Samantha is seated behind a worktable. There are a series of beakers in front of her and she seems to have something or another bubbling in a larger one of them. She takes a whiff of it and nodded in satisfaction before shifting to the side and looking at the camera.

Did she have a sort of smirk on her face?]

So, here I am working on magical defenses against the rigors of making certain fish-brained, fin-rotted, purple-obsessed morons look like chumps, and I was almost curious if they were making any progress with their "White Sciences" [Yes, she actually made the quote signs with her fingers as she said that, snickering.] in preparing my ultimate downfall. I mean, it isn't as if they don't prattle about all the ways they're going to have me at their mercy, and I was honest to god wondering if all of that was just a bunch of hot air.

...this is Eridan Ampora. What the hell am I talking about? Of course anything Captain Ahab's said's all hot air.

[Another snicker. Anyone who knew Samantha very well might recognize that some of it was effected bravado. She was still struggling with what her feelings were about him, but these little games were much easier to play on the network, and part of her had a feeling he'd get a kick out of shouting back at her.]

But, since I was thinking about it, I got to thinking some more. What really are the differences between magic and science? It's not like I haven't talked with a few of you about this, and I know what a certain moron thinks on the subject, but all the same with the power turned back on through the runes so to speak and with us able to affix just a little bit of the power of this world into a potion, I was wondering what some of you might have thought was the difference.

Oh, and Ahab, I am expecting great things out of you. Just so you know. Don't think I'm sitting idle over at the shop all the time.

Theory and application.

I don't know that the theories are really all that different sometimes. The application's not quite the same, though. Science uses tools a lot more than magic, which tends to focus on a person's will directly. Is that what you're getting at, though?

Well, duh. Magic is more about what you feel with your body than anything else. Do that during a scientific investigation, though, and you might just end up being a one armed wonder.

[Or, something like that. """Human""" magic users tend to be... weird at the application part.]

I don't know. You try and go from your gut with an alchemical potion, and you might just end up without a gut, and these things are pretty much magical too.

Of course, it might depend on the world too.

That much is obvious. [Shrugssss.] I don't know about your world, but I never really saw anything like alchemy back on my side of things. Just regular manufacturing.

I specialized in illusions. Alchemy was more a side thing for me. A lot of the best illusions had more to do with affecting another person's mind to alter their perceptions. Some of it involves actually bending the light around something to make it invisible or look like something else.

Some of that's definitely the will. Some of it's knowing how to convince someone to believe what you want them to.

[Just going to be a little bit thoughtful about that before responding. It didn't quite sound like magic back in her own world, but:]

The Moon? Well, it's not like I'm not used to the Moon being matched up with deception and lies. That's in the Tarot, but why do you say that?

Because, it's the same as this. Can't do much magic on my world without one of these babies.

[And, bringing the back of her wrist and Familiar into view just as she says that.]

Oh, wait... ok. I sort of get it, but I sort of don't. You're talking about one of those things like the one you've got inside of you, aren't you?

That's right. The kind of magic you described there sounds exactly like what another Familiar does.

So, if these things are what give you magic, what sorts of magic did yours give you? That makes me more curious actually.

Not much, actually. This set's pretty tame, and I am a human. The worst I can do without popping a vein is making it show up and tapping things with it to put them in storage.

It's something at the very least. So this is magic only they can tap into fully, or is it because you haven't had it long enough?

No idea. But I don't think they're supposed to like human bodies in the first place, so that might be as far as I get with it.

As long as the magic doesn't work here, we'll never know, and I don't know that I'd want to monkey with what's in you here. I... remember being you just enough to know better.

Oh, please. It's just a Familiar. If it didn't kill me the first time I used it, it's not going to kill me now. What you felt was just a side effect.

Eve... it felt like that thing's twisted all the way down to your heart. I don't want to fuck with something hooked in that deep. Seriously, I'd be afraid of giving you a heart attack.

Oh. That.

[EERIE. SILENCE FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS HERE.]

[--aaaaand, utter mood change.]

Aw, so you do worry about me! Don't worry too much, though. You wouldn't be able to mess around with this thing even if you tried.

[She grunted and rubbed her fingers through her hair, sighed and shook her head.]

Maybe I do, maybe I do. All the same, I'd rather be careful with that thing, Eve. I don't know how you deal with that sensation all the time.

I don't. I only notice it when I tug on the string on purpose now. If it expects me to fight, it's not going to give me something that'll make moving hell.

Yeah, I guess it's a lot more obvious what's weird when you're not used to feeling it all the time too. I kind of wasn't expecting to feel what looked like a bracelet hooked into my chest when I ended up you for a day.

Anymore than I'm sure you were expecting... well, me.

You can thank your brain for that. Have you ever considered bathing in tomato juice daily? Being you reeks-- literally.

We tried that when I was younger. Doesn't work, and it gets real bad... well, when I'm aroused. [She muttered, annoyed at her physiology for the tenth time that day.] It's like my tail. It doesn't go away, and perfumes just mask it a little.
