[text] From the Casebook of John Watson.
It has not yet been a full seven days since the start of the Illness that blighted so many citizens of Asgard, Travellers and Natives alike. The gentle rays of the waning autumn sun that shine through my study window this mellow evening, shine on many who bear the marks of the Illness still and many more who bear the invisible scars of grief. Yet, many more walk these sad streets who would not be with us if it were not for the efforts of many of our number and it is to honour those brave spirits as well as remember those we lost, that I narrate this sad tale.
For those too young or too tender-hearted to bear this account, I beg you click not on this "cut-text". It is not my wish to cause more pain with this remembrance, and I shall spare no details in my narration. No; it is the author's sincere wish that his narrative serve not only as tribute but as a call to arms, even a starting point for further discussion on the preparation of this city for the difficulties that lie ahead.
Day 147.
At an early hour of the morning, possibly designed to coincide with the time when the citizens of Asgard were most likely on their way to their places of work, a large reptilian creature, greatly resembling those legendary creatures of yore known as 'The Dragon' was sighted flying above the city. He dropped three cannisters, each landing in a populated part of Thor, Hel and Freya respectively.
An eye-witness account of the cannisters landing may be found in this "video recording" made to the bracelets by a notable urchin here. (The author finds it prudent to add that though the information broadcast by Master Conan certainly served a purpose, it would be no bad thing if the task was left to the child's elders. Is there no parent or guardian with a claim to the boy who might keep him in check?) Of most interest is that those immediately on the scene claimed to have seen and inhaled a "smoke, rusty in colour", odourless but with a peculiar sensation when inhaled. There was no immediate effect, and assuming the incident a botched attempt on behalf of our enemies, those unhappy victims went about their daily lives, unaware.
Indeed, most of the city remained unaware of the import of the events that took place that morning -- if indeed they were aware of them at all -- until the mid afternoon, when this broadcast made by one Miss Katniss Evergreen was made. A regular stream of patients with baffling symptoms had shown up at my clinic, and the hospital in Sigyn, since mid-day, but not until Miss Evergreen made us aware of the presence of the Dragon and the cannisters did we fully grasp the situation. Until then, we'd looked for a natural explanation for the illness that was so swiftly effecting our population. Now we sought the unnatural.
Mindful of the fact that most of my readers are not members of the medical profession, I will content myself to providing a brief description of the symptoms and of the problems we faced in threating them. Those who wish to know in more detail what we faced are invited to apply in person to me at my clinic for a glance at my records and I am sure that my fellow medical professionals will offer the same.
To the matter at hand; The Symptoms. The most common complaint was a persistent sore throat. Seemingly minor, however soothing drinks and other concoctions provided only temporary relief; as did the application of Damage Drain or the Healing Magic of those of Sigyn House. In a short few hours, victims of this malady lost their voice or developed an alarming cough. As time progressed and their condition worsened, many coughed up blood (I beg the indulgence of my fellow medics in choosing lay terms over exact medical description, but I feel it meet to word things as simply as possible for the benefit of the whole). Fever and nausea soon followed, whether a consequence of the cough or an accessory to it, it is difficult even now to say. The last symptom to appear were marks upon the flesh as of a burn. Again, healing poultices and salves when applied provided but a temporary check. Within a few hours our patients again complained of pain and heat.
As a move by our enemy designed to tax our resources it worked remarkable well. Both my small clinic and the larger hospital were full within a few hours and crowded before the end of the day. It is a great tribute to the professionalism of the staff at both institutions that there was no great panic. If our enemies intended to overwhelm us, they did not count on the gallantness of both staff and the many volunteers who freely offered their time and service to aid their fellows in their hour of need.
Naturally, the medical staff were not idle in this time. However, we were hampered by the sheer numbers of patients needing attention. Of most difficulty in finding a solution to the Illness was the sheer strangeness of it. Our medical professionals come predominantly from those based in science, while our healers typically have more experience in magic. Thus, it was not easy for us to come to terms with a disease that was both engineered and magical. Making matters worse was the fact that those exposed to the victims of the smoke were also beginning to fall ill. However in our darkest hours, Day 148 mid-afternoon onwards, we saw the first glimmer of hope even as we lost our first patients to this cruelly implacable enemy. As the first wave of victims began to recover, we found within our grasp the means to craft a vaccine. Miss Jasmine, one of my valued interns, announced our progress to the "network" here. I'm sure we all honour her efforts greatly, as we do Mr Pendragon's unstinted efforts to see the finished vaccine distributed. These are just a few of the many selfless individuals who gave their time and hardwork to the cause of aiding their fellows. I myself am deeply obliged to everyone I spoke to at the Clinic or Hospital, the numerous volunteers I saw hard at work, even our herbalist suppliers who gave up much of their stocks to the common cause.
Let us reflect, therefore, not only on what was lost, but what was given, what was learned -- and, most importantly -- what remains to be done.
It is not unlikely that we will find ourselves in need of the services of volunteers again. I've been offering internships at my clinic to those wishing to further their existing medical knowledge or to learn how to combine their healing power with existing medical practices. However, in light of recent sad events, I have made up my mind to offer a first-aid training to all who desire it, as often as demand allows. If you are interested in taking part in these classes, please leave your name below.
I remain your humble servant,
John Watson (M.D)

Not a surprise, since Sherlock Holmes is here too, but it's still really amazing. ]
Very well written.
[ Beautiful, you could say. And useful. ]
I'd like to see those records.

Well! It's the first time I've heard that particular complaint. Should I endaevour to be more succinct in future?
And you will be delighted to learn that you won't be alone in those classes.

Have you any prior experience, or is there a time that would be more to your convenience?

I'd be interested in the first aid lessons. Having more modern medical skills would be useful.

And I'm flattered that you consider my poor tribute in such terms. It's only the tip of the iceberg that many of us feel, I'm afraid.

Your offer to teach fellow Travelers is also an excellent idea. Though I will not partake, since I have already been trained in first aid, I also thank you for the kindness and prudence of the offer.
text;
I hope that my endaevours and those of our volunteers will be useful. Perhaps with your experience, you might attend not as a student, but as a teacher yourself?

[ there's a bit of amusement in his smile, weary though it may be. ]
You have our endless thanks as well for your invaluable efforts in these dark hours. Certainly, we would have fared for the worse without your expertise.

As indeed, we owe much to the efforts of yourself and your team of volunteers. I hope that you have had the chance to at least rest and recover your strength since then?

I know I'm also an intern, but I'd like to sit in on these classes if I have the time. To learn, and also learn how to teach once I know I can do it.

So that's all that went down...I didn't get a chance to check the network, so I had no clue what happened.

[Almost a perfectly-as-described case of getting sick from the Wave 1 patients. Combined with an overprotective best friend, he had been embarrassingly bed-bound for what felt like... well, forever.]
Are you... still taking interns? I-if not, I would at least be interested in studying first aid again.
audio
Surely the role of an intern would be too basic for the experience and training you already have? You are welcome to take that position if you wish, but I'm sure that you could handle a more active role as nurse or medical assistant.
((ooc: no worries! I am going slowly with Watson tags because I overdid things in the event and am a little burnt out.))

[The girl on the other end of the feed is not the smiling, cheerful Nanako as she usually is. She's a little quieter than usual, maybe even a bit of frustration mixed in her voice, still unhappy about being rendered so helpless while the disease ran its course. She never wants to go through something like that again.
But a moment later, as if remembering herself, she smiles sheepishly.]
